Rota nanny is a term still relatively unknown to the general public, but highly sought after by families whose lifestyle demands uninterrupted professional presence. Weeks abroad, demanding work schedules, frequent travel, multiple residences… For some families, a single full-time nanny is simply not enough. This is where the rota system comes in.

What is a rota nanny?
A rota nanny is a nanny who works alternately with another nanny, according to a weekly rotation system. In practice, two nannies take turns: one works a full week, the other takes over the following week.
During her work week, the rota nanny provides complete care, 7 days a week, day and night . She is fully available for the children, without any time restrictions.
The following week, she is completely free, while her colleague takes over with the same continuity.
This system guarantees the family a seamless professional presence , while offering each nanny a balanced lifestyle.

Which family is the Rota Nanny suitable for?
The rotation system is not suitable for all situations. It meets very specific needs:
Families with busy professional schedules
Business leaders, professionals with atypical schedules, and families where both parents travel regularly for work: Rota Nanny guarantees a constant professional presence without the hassle of dealing with the unexpected challenges of traditional childcare.
Families residing internationally
Monaco, London, Dubai, New York… Expat or multicontinental families often need a nanny who can travel with them and adapt to different time zones. A rota nanny, accustomed to intensive schedules, is ideally suited for this type of assignment. Discover how Magic Nannies supports international placements .
Families with young children or infants
When a newborn or very young child requires regular overnight care, the rotation system ensures continuity without exhausting any single caregiver. In some cases, a maternity nurse provides care for the first few weeks before a rotation nanny takes over.
Families with several young children
Twins, triplets, or close siblings, as soon as the needs exceed what one person can handle over time, the rotation system becomes a logical and caring solution.
What profile is needed for a rota nanny?
A rota nanny is not simply a nanny available 7 days a week. It is a particularly experienced profile, similar to a children's governess , with expanded skills:
Minimum 8 to 10 years of experience working with young children and older children
Perfectly bilingual in French and English , often trilingual
Ability to work smoothly and coherently in pairs
High adaptability: travel, changes of residence, jet lag
Absolute discretion and highly developed interpersonal skills
Often considered a full-fledged member of the family
At Magic Nannies, each rota nanny is selected according to our usual rigorous criteria: verified references, in-depth interview, and criminal record check. Discover our recruitment process .
What salary does a rota nanny receive?
Due to the intensity of the position and the level of experience required, the rota nanny is one of the best paid profiles among early childhood professionals.
At Magic Nannies, the observed price range is as follows:
€4,000 to €5,000 net per month in a live-in package
This salary covers the entire working week (7 days a week, day and night). The week off is unpaid; this is compensation for a very demanding schedule during peak periods.

How exactly does the rota system work?
The typical organization
Week 1: Nanny A takes care of the children, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. She is housed in the family home (live-in).
Week 2: Nanny B takes over under the same conditions. Nanny A is completely free.
Handover: A handover time between the two nannies is planned at each change of week to ensure continuity of children's routines, health, ongoing activities, special needs.
Educational coherence
The success of a rotation system depends on the alignment between the two caregivers. Magic Nannies carefully selects two nannies who are compatible in their educational approach, personality, and language skills. Both profiles are then presented to the family for approval.
Travel
The rota nanny travels with the family during their busy weeks. She adapts to destinations and changes of residence between Paris, Monaco, London, or Dubai. This is one of the distinguishing characteristics of this profile compared to a temporary travel nanny .
Rota nanny and shared childcare: don't confuse them
Shared childcare involves two different families sharing the same nanny to reduce costs. Rota nanny, on the other hand, is dedicated to a single family but alternates with a colleague to ensure 7/7 continuity.
These two systems meet opposing needs: shared care optimizes costs, while rota nanny maximizes availability and continuity.
How to recruit a rota nanny with Magic Nannies?
Recruiting a rota nanny is more complex than a standard placement; it requires finding two compatible candidates, introducing them to the family, and coordinating their availability. This is precisely why using a specialized agency makes all the difference.
Magic Nannies manages the entire process: sourcing, interviews, reference checks, candidate presentations, and onboarding support. To understand all the steps, see our how it works page.
